Department Overview

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology, established in 2014, where we offer a dynamic three-year B.Sc. program to 36 students. Our well-equipped laboratory facilitates hands-on learning and innovation. Our experienced faculty supports academic, extracurricular, and research activities. Our alumni excel in prestigious institutions and prominent positions globally. Our program cultivates scientific, analytical, and problem-solving skills, covering microorganism characteristics, applications in drug production, pollution control, and more.

We provide courses in English, biology, research methodology, and intellectual property rights. Students engage in biochemistry, biostatistics, BCA, and compulsory social service activities. Our department conducts research on economically important microbes and clinical pathogens. Graduates emerge with robust microbiological knowledge, research skills, and career opportunities in food industries, pharmaceuticals, medical research, agriculture, or higher education. Mukesh M. Elamittathu

Head of the Department of Microbiology

Mukesh M. Elamittathu is the Head of the Department of Microbiology at Malabar College of Commerce and Science, Manoor. He is a dedicated academician and researcher with over 7 years of teaching experience, including 6 years and 8 months of experience in undergraduate and postgraduate Microbiology education.

He has previously served as Assistant Professor at MES College, Marampally, Aluva, and Presentation College of Applied Sciences, Puthenvelikkara, Ernakulam. He has also served as the Head of the Department of Microbiology at Tharananellur Arts and Science College, Irinjalakuda.

He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Microbiology at Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies (VISTAS), Chennai. His research interests include microbial biotechnology, industrial microbiology, environmental microbiology, sustainable bioremediation, biofertilizers, probiotics, and industrial fermentation.

Throughout his academic career, he has been actively involved in teaching, curriculum development, student mentoring, research guidance, and organizing academic and extension activities. He is committed to promoting innovative teaching practices, research excellence, and outcome-based education. His areas of interest include microbial biotechnology, industrial fermentation, environmental sustainability, and interdisciplinary research aimed at addressing contemporary scientific and societal challenges.
